American flag

The spirit of America is the enthusiasm of every brother and sister working side by side and hand in hand to build a better country to live in; the strength and backbone of this great land; the young at heart, never too deaf to accept the wisdom of our elders experience nor too blind to eagerly listen to the fresh ideas of the younger generation. America, still young with the fragility of a tiny baby; precious as a diamond which crumbles if the diamond cutter slips; yet, like a great magnet drawing all together with love. Enthusiasm: eagerness to overlook the bad and seek the good. The spirit of America: the unseen, the unspoken word; brothers and sister pulling the same direction on the rope of life. Hang in there America! We love you! Copyright © Carolyn Bigler Hebert 1976 I wrote this poem for the bicentenial celebration.

Our sixteenth president, Abraham Lincoln, is well loved for his stand on freedom in America. In his speach, The Gettyburg Address, his emphasis was on the word people; of the people, for the people, and by the people. Our country was founded on Christian principles. Lincoln was a Christian man, acceptance of God as his devine leader on the battlefield of Gettysburg. A friend of mine was an Abraham Lincon Presenter and studied the man extensively. However, I have learned that Lincoln was never baptized. There are numerous Lincoln Presenters who portray Lincoln with expertise and mezmerize their captive audiences across this great nation of ours. To go to a Lincoln presenter website, click on the sculpture photo. There you will also find Mary Todd Lincoln presenters.

On the Lincoln Memorial, the words at the top read "In this temple, as in the hearts of the people, for whom he saved the Unions, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever." The remarks of Lincoln inscribed at the bottom of the sculpture reads, "I go for all sharing the priveleges of the government who assist in bearing its burdens, by no means excluding women."

America O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good With brotherhood From sea to shining sea! Battle Hymn of the Republic Mine eyes have seen the glory Of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage Where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning Of His terrible swift sword, His truth is marching on. Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on. God Bless America God bless America Land that I love Stand beside her, And guide her, Through the night With the light from above, From the mountains, To the prairies, To the ocean, White with foam, God bless America, My home sweet home. God bless America, My home sweet home.
